Alcúdia's origins and history
The first human settlement in this region of the Balearic Islands dates back to a time between 2000 and 1200 BC, during the pre-Talayotic period. In fact, there are still some striking very well preserved remains, specifically the ones that you can visit in Son Simó settlement.
In 123 BC, a Roman general and politician called Quintus Caecilius Metellus conquered Mallorca in the name of the Roman Empire. Once there, he founded the cities of Palma and Pollentia. Afterwards, the island experienced several invasions, the most important ones being the Vandal Kingdom and the early Muslim conquests.
In 1229, Mallorca was liberated from Muslim occupation and began to form part of the the Crown of Aragon, becoming the Kingdom of Majorca. Later on, King James I handed the town of Alcúdia to the Knights Templar, and from then on, it evolved and grew as Mallorca’s centre of population and wealth, albeit with some ups and downs.
The urban layout of Alcúdia is clearly medieval. It features two walled enclosures, and the beauty of its architectural heritage continues to captivate every visitor, making it impossible not to fall in love with it!
