Origins and history of Alcúdia

The origin of the first human settlement in this region of the Balearic Islands dates back to the pre-Talayotic period, between 2000 and 1200 BC. In fact, there are still some striking remains, specifically the talayots that you can visit in the Son Simón settlement.

In 123 BC, the Roman consul Quintus Caecilius Metellus conquered Mallorca in the name of Rome. Once there, he founded the cities of Palma and Pollentia, just a few metres from the centre of this prosperous and highly endowed town.

Afterwards, it experienced the passage of the barbarians – with Vandal sacking included – and the Muslims. In 1229, the town was incorporated into the Crown of Aragon and, subsequently, King James I handed it over to the Knights Templar. From then on, it evolved and grew as a centre of population and wealth, albeit with some ups and downs.

Its urban layout is clearly medieval. It includes two walled enclosures and the beauty of its architectural heritage continues to envelop every visitor to Alcudia town. It is impossible not to end up surrendered at its feet!
