The history of CASTELL DE CAPDEPERA
The area where the castle now stands was already inhabited in prehistoric times by early communities who lived in caves. Later came the Talayotic people, and centuries after that, the Romans turned it into a key point on Mediterranean navigation routes. With the arrival of the Vandals and the Byzantines, the island went through periods of decline, until the 10th century, when the Muslims transformed it into a prosperous settlement.
But things got interesting in 1229 when Jaume I conquered Mallorca and decided to take Menorca without a major battle by using a clever wartime trick: he lit bonfires in Capdepera to simulate a massive army ready to attack. The Menorcan Muslims, seeing the smoke, agreed to surrender peacefully. This led to the Treaty of Capdepera, the oldest known peace agreement in the Balearic Islands.
Years later, Jaume II decided to fortify the area and ordered the construction of the castle in 1300, to create a walled village where residents could take refuge in case of attack. Over time, the need for such a stronghold declined, and in the 18th century, it became a military garrison. In 1856, the soldiers left the castle, and after years of neglect, it was restored by Capdepera Town Hall in 1983. Thanks to that, you can now visit it in excellent condition.
What to see inside the Castell de Capdepera
