If you want to discover one of the most peaceful sides of Mallorca, you have to come and visit Capdepera. It’s one of those towns that doesn’t need much to charm you. It is surrounded by beautiful landscapes, with a lot of amazing beaches and, as if that were not enough, it also has a historic center and a must-see castle.
Keep reading, because we are going to tell you everything there is to see in Capdepera.
Where is Capdepera and how to get there
In the northeast of Mallorca, between mountains and sea, Capdepera awaits you, a town with a medieval soul and views that will make you fall in love. Only 80 kilometers from Palma, getting there is as easy as taking the Ma-15 road towards Manacor and continuing to Artà: in just over an hour you will be walking through its cobbled streets and its imposing castle. If you prefer public transport, you can also get there comfortably by bus from the intermodal station in Palma. Perfect for an authentic getaway, with nearby beaches such as Cala Ratjada or Cala Mesquida that complete the ideal plan.
The Castle of Capdepera, one of the jewels of Mallorca
The first thing that will catch your attention, even before entering the town, is the Castle of Capdepera. It stands on a hill and is one of the best-preserved fortresses in Mallorca. And in case you’re wondering… yes! Climbing up to it is totally worth it.
You will pass through cobbled streets and a lot of old houses. When you are at the top, you can see the Mediterranean, the fields and even Menorca if the day is clear. Once inside the enclosure you will find walls, towers and a small chapel.
And if you can come in May, specifically the third weekend, you will coincide with the celebration of the Medieval Fair of Capdepera. It’s really amazing! Artisan and food stalls are set up, and there is music, juggling, and knights everywhere.
Stroll through its old town
After the castle, the best thing to see in Capdepera is its old town. Its streets are narrow and made of stone, and the facades of the buildings have that golden color so typical of the island.
The nerve center of the historic center is the Plaça de l’Orient, a tree-lined square ideal for trying the typical food of Mallorca. We recommend stopping by Café El Oriente, where you can have sandwiches, pa amb olis, tapas and all kinds of portions.
And if your tour of the center coincides with a Wednesday morning, you’re in luck! You will come across the weekly market where the locals buy fruit, vegetables, flowers and cheeses. It is the perfect place to try a little of everything and get some souvenirs, from artisan olive oil to a handmade piece of pottery.
Very close by you can’t miss another of the classics to see in Capdepera: the Church of San Bartomeu, from the 14th century. It is one of the best examples of traditional Balearic architecture.
And although Capdepera is small, it has a lot to discover. If you fancy something different, stop by the Museo de la Llata, dedicated to the traditional braiding of palm leaves. It is a typical craft of the area and here you will see how baskets, hats and utensils of a lifetime were made by hand.
Coves near Capdepera that you cannot miss
The beautiful thing about Capdepera is that, in addition to its history, it has some of the most spectacular coves in Mallorca within easy reach. If you like the sea,
And of course, you can’t miss Cala Mesquida. It is wild, open and with an impressive dune landscape. If you like surfing or want to enjoy a more natural beach, this is the best choice. And if you wait until sunset, you will see how the color of the water becomes more and more golden. The sunsets here are a delight.
But the jewel of the area is Cala Ratjada, the port of the municipality. Here you will have the same natural environment, but with a lot of bars, restaurants with fresh fish and terraces to complete the plan . In addition, it is the ideal place to see one of the best sunrises in Mallorca.
And if you want to go a little further, write down another stop that is well worth it: Cala Millor. It is only about twenty minutes by car from Capdepera and is one of the longest and most beautiful beaches in the eastern part of Mallorca.
What to see in the surroundings of Capdepera
If you have time —and you should take an extra day—, the surroundings of Capdepera are also wonderful. Just 15 minutes by car are some of the most impressive caves in Mallorca: the Artà caves.
You can also visit Canyamel, a coastal area with a beautiful beach and a 13th-century defensive tower, and if you fancy something with a more bohemian atmosphere, take a walk around Artà. It is a charming town that has a sanctuary —that of Sant Salvador— at the top and a weekly market on Tuesdays that is also worth it.
And if you don’t mind getting up early, go straight to the Capdepera Lighthouse. It is the easternmost point of the island and seeing the sunrise from here is an experience you will not forget.
Why you have to come to Capdepera
If you want to enjoy the small details and reconnect with the simplest and most beautiful part of Mallorca, you have a lot to see in Capdepera. Here you can start the day with the sound of the town bells while having a pa amb oli for breakfast, continue by climbing the castle, take a dip in Cala Ratjada before eating rice on the beach and end the afternoon watching the sunset.
And to round off the day, nothing like staying with Ideal Property. We have houses and villas in the middle of nature and also a step away from the sea, with private pool, terraces and everything you need to feel at home.
Although the best thing about choosing Capdepera is that you will not only enjoy what is in the town: you can also easily explore the north and east of Mallorca.
So come on, pack your suitcase, there are an endless number of things to see in Capdepera and its surroundings and… they are waiting for you!
