If you are one of those who think Mallorca no longer has quiet corners to truly disconnect, it’s because you haven’t set foot in Canyamel yet.
Located on the easternmost tip of the island, Canyamel is a tourist hub, yes, but with a family-friendly vibe far removed from the noise and ostentation of large resorts. It is the perfect destination if you are looking to wake up to birdsong, take a dip in a crystal-clear beach, and have some of the wildest landscapes in the Llevant region close at hand.
Sound good? Well, let us tell you that, in addition to its incredible beaches, this corner also boasts caves, cliffs, and a thousand plans related to sports and outdoor excursions.
Get ready, because Canyamel has a lot to offer you; much more than you think.
Where is Canyamel and why it will win you over
Canyamel belongs to the municipality of Capdepera and is nestled between low mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. Put like that… it couldn’t be better, right?
To give you your bearings, it is located right between Cala Millor and Cala Ratjada. And while its neighbors offer a wide range of experiences—nightlife, family plans, contact with the environment, etc.—Canyamel focuses solely and exclusively on well-being and contact with nature.
One of its biggest attractions is the landscape. The valley where it sits is crossed by the Torrent de Canyamel, which flows into the beach itself, forming a small wetland inhabited by ducks and countless seabirds. Despite Mallorca’s temperatures—averaging around 18°C per year—this area always stays very green.
Additionally, its orientation makes for spectacular views. From the shore, you can see the cliffs protecting the bay, home to many ancient caves—some open to visitors and others not—and trails that run along the coast.
What to see in Canyamel
Even though it is a small place, Canyamel has a couple of mandatory stops you can’t skip. The first, obviously, is its beach. It is one of the best coves in Mallorca if you are looking for comfort without sacrificing beauty. It has about 300 meters of white sand and waters so clean you won’t even need to put on snorkeling goggles to see hundreds of fish.
And if you want some variety, the beaches of Capdepera and its surroundings also live up to Mallorca’s reputation as a paradise destination. You must visit Cala Agulla, Cala Mesquida, or Cala Gat—spectacular sandy beaches with protected dunes surrounded by pines and mountains that you have to see at least once in your life.
And now for two more highlights of the resort that you can’t miss.
The Caves of Artà
Don’t let the name confuse you! The famous Caves of Artà are in Canyamel, right at the end of the road that skirts the coast. It’s a visit we highly recommend; what impresses most are the stalagmites and stalactites of different shapes and considerable size… some are over 20 meters high!
The guided tour includes a light and classical music show that, combined with the cave’s acoustics, will give you goosebumps. Plus, you get another experience as a bonus, because the entrance to the caves offers one of the best panoramic views of Canyamel Bay. Without a doubt, one of the best caves in Mallorca.
The Canyamel Tower
If you head a bit inland, just a couple of kilometers from the beach, you’ll find the Canyamel Tower. It is a 13th-century defense building standing 23 meters tall in a Gothic style that is wonderfully preserved. In its day, it served to protect the valley’s inhabitants from pirate attacks—yes, they were everywhere in Mallorca!
Today it functions as a cultural center hosting exhibitions and concerts, in addition to offering a very enriching visit for just €3. However, keep an eye on their website because it isn’t always open. The complex also features a restaurant, a hotel, and Fontsanta, a thermal spa that is well worth a visit. It is the only thermal water spa in the Balearic Islands, which is saying something.
What to do in Canyamel: plans for all tastes
If you’re the type who can’t stay still on a towel, Canyamel has plenty to keep you going. Here are some of the best plans you can put together.
Don't miss out on sports
If golf in Mallorca or anywhere else in the world is your thing, you’re in luck. Canyamel Golf is one of the most beautiful and technically demanding courses on the island. It features 6,198 meters and 18 holes (PAR 73), though the most interesting part is that it was created by architect José Gancedo, known as the “Picasso of Golf.” Curious? Then you’ll have to come and see it for yourself.
And if you prefer the racket, the town is famous for its excellent tennis facilities, where even professional teams come to train during the pre-season.
We also recommend renting paddle surf equipment, snorkeling gear, or a kayak in Mallorca. Following the cliffs southward is a fantastic experience; you’ll discover small cavities in the rock where the water glows in a special way.
If you prefer to go on foot, there are routes that climb the mountains surrounding the valley, such as La Talaia Nova de Cap Vermell, which offers views of the entire Canyamel Platja resort and Capdepera; or the trail from Canyamel to Es Carregador, a much more demanding route but with stops at Cala de Sa Font or Cala de n’Aladern.
Gastronomy: another point in favor of Canyamel in Mallorca
You can’t leave Canyamel without trying the local cuisine. There are several restaurants near the beach serving amazing rice dishes and fresh fish. But if you want something special, look for places offering the famous porcella (roast suckling pig), a star dish of typical Mallorcan food that they master in this Llevant area.
More things to do around Canyamel
In this resort, the ideal plan is to spend a day or two to make the most of its beaches and calm. But take note, because if you’re looking for a more complete getaway, many travelers prefer to base themselves in other towns with more to do and, in the process, get to know them thoroughly and have better connections to explore the rest of the Mallorcan Llevant. Let’s talk about them!
Capdepera
Just a few steps from Canyamel is everything there is to see in Capdepera, which is quite a lot.
You absolutely must visit its historic center. The crown jewel is Capdepera Castle, a 14th-century walled fortress from which you can even spot Menorca. Another plan that is well worth it is heading to the easternmost point of the island to watch a sunset at the Capdepera Lighthouse.
Cala Ratjada
Cala Ratjada is the perfect place to stroll through its fishing port, go shopping, or enjoy dinner on its promenade. Additionally, from here you can take some of the best boat trips in Mallorca, which take you to explore sea caves and virgin coves inaccessible by land.
Are you coming to discover Canyamel and its surroundings?
If you’ve already visualized yourself enjoying everything this area offers, you only need to choose the perfect place to rest. Although Canyamel is ideal for a visit, staying in Cala Ratjada or Capdepera will give you that extra bit of convenience.
