Three charms of Muro in Mallorca

Before going into details, remember this trio that defines Muro: an endless beach, a natural park, and the town center. Three charms that complement each other and give you days of sun, nature, and good tradition.

#1 Muro's Old Town

The center of Muro, in Mallorca, is characterized by facades with green shutters, open doorways, patios, the occasional stately home, and lots of shops and cafes.

The walk through the city has to start near the parish church of Sant Joan Baptista, an imposing late Gothic construction that has a bell tower connected by a small bridge, a detail that makes it unmistakable. Inside, it has a single nave with side chapels, a baroque altarpiece, and an organ that will take your breath away.

A few steps away, on Carrer Major, the Museu Etnològic de Muro awaits you, housed in a 17th-century manor house. It is the perfect place to understand what rural Mallorca was like. Here you will see tools, fabrics, what an old kitchen was like, and some of the patios. If you like these “al fresco” plans, look for the convent and church of Santa Anna and take a walk through its cloister, it is well worth it.

And no, there is no town, municipality, or locality worth its salt that does not have a weekly market. On Sunday mornings it is Muro’s turn. The square is filled with seasonal fruits and vegetables, freshly baked bread, flowers, and a contagious village atmosphere. It is the best time to mingle with people, have a snack, and fill your backpack with edible—and not so edible—souvenirs.

#2 Playa de Muro, one of the main attractions of the area

The first mandatory stop if you come to Muro in Mallorca is the beach that bears the same name, a paradisiacal sandy area.

It is kilometers and kilometers of fine white sand that are lost in the distance within the Bay of Alcúdia. The water is turquoise, shallow for the first few meters, and you will not find any type of current most of the year.

It has wooden walkways to reach it that save the Mediterranean dunes and that even take you out to sea. We are not exaggerating if we tell you that it is a very long beach—about six kilometers—although not very wide. It has several sectors and many entrances so you don’t have to walk too far to reach the sand.

And if you see posidonia on the shore, it is not dirt; it is the marine plant that makes the water so clean, which is why it is not removed.

And services? It has everything: rental of umbrellas, hammocks, safes—in case you distrust—, lifeguards, showers, and toilets.

If you are daring, you can also launch yourself into adventure with the multiple aquatic activities available: rides on pedalos—aquatic scooter—, kayak routes, paddle surfing classes, or kitesurfing, windsurfing, or water skiing sessions.

#3 The Natural Park of s’Albufera

A few steps from the sand you have a completely different world, with winding canals, calm lagoons, and a silence that is only broken by birds: the Natural Park of s’Albufera.

This is the most important wetland in Mallorca and a perfect place to exchange the saltpeter for the shade of the reed beds.

In addition, it has a lot of bird observatories hidden among the reeds. From here you can see a parade of life: herons, ducks, kingfishers, and dragonflies.

To visit it, go to the visitor center and ask for the free permit before entering; with that in hand, you can travel the signposted itineraries. Most are flat, comfortable, and suitable for all ages.

If you want to arrive by bicycle, the bay lane leaves you very close and, once inside, remember that the rules are these: do not leave the walkways, do not use drones, do not uproot plants, and do not disturb the fauna.

In return, the park gives you wooden shelters where you can peek out in silence, a soundtrack of frogs and birds, and peach-colored sunsets that you will not be able to see anywhere else in the world.

On windy days or when the sun is too hot, s’Albufera is a perfect plan B. Are you taking advantage of it?

What to do around Muro in Mallorca

Due to its location—in the north of the island—Muro is an excellent starting point to explore other nearby Mallorcan jewels. A few kilometers away you have the historic walled city of Alcúdia, with its charming old town.

And if you wonder what to do in Alcúdia, start by walking on the wall, getting lost in its cobbled streets, looking out at the market, and finishing with an ice cream in the Plaça de Carles V; and, if your body asks for the sea, get on a catamaran from Alcúdia to skirt the entire bay.

Towards the interior, towns like Sa Pobla—famous for its potato fields—or Santa Margalida preserve their traditional agricultural environment and give you long after-dinner conversations among local wines and traditional recipes.

And if you have a car, in less than 30 minutes you can plant yourself in the Port of Pollença or at the beginning of the Serra de Tramuntana to complete your trip with spectacular mountain landscapes.

As you can see, it is impossible to get bored both in Muro in Mallorca and in its surroundings.

Typical gastronomy of the area

Talking about Mallorca is talking about good food, and Muro is no exception. The local gastronomy delights all palates with homemade dishes and local products. In the restaurants and cellers—typical taverns—of Muro in Mallorca you can savor traditional Mallorcan recipes such as arròs brut—a mellow rice with meats and vegetables—, the frit mallorquí—fried pork with potatoes and peppers, very spicy—or the tumbet—a delicious vegetable ratatouille with olive oil—.

There is no shortage of classic sobrasadas and artisan butifarrones, sausages that are part of the culinary soul of the island. And for dessert, how about an ensaimada sprinkled with sugar or a piece of spongy coca de patata?

With one of these dishes in your stomach, you can already say—loud and clear—that you have tasted the typical food of Mallorca.
