The Castell de la Punta de n’Amer Awaits You in Mallorca

If you’re planning your next island getaway and looking for an activity that combines nature, a touch of adventure, and picture-perfect views, you have to visit the Castell de la Punta de n’Amer.

It’s located between Cala Millor and Sa Coma, a small peninsula that has resisted industrialization to remain a pristine corner of the island. Here you won’t find asphalt or engine noise; only dunes, rocks sculpted by the wind, and a castle worth seeing.

We’ll tell you why you should come and how to plan your route.

A Bit of History About This Pirate Refuge

To understand what a castle is doing in the middle of this practically deserted landscape, you have to travel back in time to the 17th century. Back then, living near the coast in the Balearic Islands was a risky business, as pirates would appear when you least expected them, looking for loot.

The Castell de la Punta de n’Amer —or Es Castellet, as we call it around here— was built between 1693 and 1696 to guard the stretch of coast that remained “blind” between Porto Cristo and Cap Roig.

And what’s it like? Don’t expect a giant fortress; it’s a robust square tower surrounded by a moat carved into the sandstone rock itself. The best part is that it’s very well preserved. You can cross its wooden drawbridge and climb a spiral staircase to the very top, where iron cannons still rest, pointing out to sea.

How to Get There and the Secret of Punta de n’Amer

Getting here is a breeze; it’s an ideal excursion in Mallorca for those days when you want to walk but don’t want to end up exhausted. The peninsula is right between Cala Millor and Sa Coma, and you can start from either side.

If you’re coming from Cala Millor, leave your car at the end of the promenade, in the Cala Nau area, and enter the pine forest following the sandy paths; it will take about 20 minutes. If you prefer to start from Sa Coma, park at the end of Avenida de ses Palmeres, and you’ll see a wide, very easy path that takes you to the Castell de la Punta de n’Amer in about half an hour.

The path is practically flat, so you can chat and enjoy the vegetation, which is typical of a dune system: low pine trees shaped by the wind, mastic shrubs, and plenty of rosemary that perfumes the entire route. As for the fauna, mainly small lizards live here, which you’ll see scurrying over the rocks, as well as a wide variety of seabirds and an occasional rabbit.

And the golden tip is not to limit yourself to the views of the Castell de la Punta de n’Amer. If you keep walking towards the end, you’ll reach almost the edge of the cliff. This place is called Punta de n’Amer and it’s an enormous rock resting on a natural pedestal. It’s the spot with the most spectacular views in the entire area.

What to Do Here

Aside from being amazed by the views from the rooftop of the Castell de la Punta de n’Amer and browsing the small museum inside with old maps and weapons, the main activity is simply to enjoy the surroundings. If you’re into sports, you can bring your mountain bike or run along the trails that border the cliffs.

And when hunger strikes, you have Bar Es Castell right next to the tower. It’s a very homely place with a terrace that’s a real luxury. On its menu, you’ll find typical Mallorcan food, like a good pa amb oli with cured meats or some grilled meat. Eating here, with the castle on one side and the Mediterranean on the other, is an experience in itself, and we can tell you it’s not expensive at all for such a privileged location.

What to See Nearby: Coves, Caves, and Towns

Since the Castell de la Punta de n’Amer is in the heart of eastern Mallorca, you’re a stone’s throw from other top spots on the island.

If you’re looking for the best beaches in Mallorca, Cala Millor is just a step away; it has a very long sandy beach with crystal-clear waters and a lively promenade, ideal if you fancy shopping or having a drink on its terraces. Right next door is Cala Bona, a much quieter old fishing port where you can enjoy spectacular fresh fish by the sea.

If you prefer something wilder and don’t mind going a bit further, head to Cala Varqués, a pristine beach with turquoise waters surrounded by pine forests that looks like something out of a movie. And if you want to discover more sandy beaches on the island, you should take one of the boat trips around Mallorca that depart from various ports every day.

You also can’t forget Sa Coma and S’Illot, two towns right next to the Castell de la Punta de n’Amer. In Sa Coma, you can enjoy a very family-friendly white sand beach with all services at hand, and in S’Illot, you can visit its talayot, a prehistoric settlement that shows you how people lived here thousands of years ago.

Fancy a bit of adventure? Ten minutes away is Porto Cristo with the famous Drach Caves, where you can see one of the largest underground lakes in the world and listen to a classical music concert from a boat. They are, without a doubt, among the best caves in Mallorca to visit.

And if you get tired of water-based activities, you can always get lost in the charming villages of Mallorca in the interior, like Artà or Búger, or go and enjoy everything there is to see in Capdepera.
