Visiting the Caves of Drach is one of those plans that needs little introduction. It doesn’t matter if it’s your first trip to the Mediterranean island or if you’ve been here before; it also doesn’t matter if you come as a couple, as a family, or on your own. Entering this underground world is always an impressive experience.
Because no, the Caves of Drach are not just caves, they are one of the great natural icons of Mallorca, where the island shows its most silent, deepest, and also most exciting face. And yes, it is one of those places that you have to visit at least once in your life. Want to know more?
Where the Caves of Drach are located and why they are so special
The Caves of Drach are located on the east coast of the island, very close to Porto Cristo. Its location is perfect if you are staying in areas such as Cala Millor, Cala Bona, Sa Coma, or even if you come from other parts of the island for a half-day excursion.
What makes them special is not only their size or age, but the combination of elements that you will find in them. Here there are spectacular rock formations, huge rooms, plays of light and, as the main attraction, one of the largest underground lakes in the world. All this is enveloped in an atmosphere that is imposing—and very much so—because the Caves of Drach in Mallorca have been forming naturally for thousands of years, drop by drop, nothing is artificial!
What is the visit to the Caves of Drach in Mallorca like?
The experience lasts about an hour and covers about 1,200 meters of underground galleries that descend to a depth of 25 meters. But don’t worry, because the interior temperature remains stable throughout the year—between 17 and 21°—so the visit is pleasant at any time.
During the tour you will pass through thousands of formations that have grown over centuries and that turn the cave into an authentic natural spectacle: rock recesses, stalactites, stalagmites, and small interior ponds, until you reach the main attraction of the visit: the giant lake.
You will be accompanied by a guide who will explain curious details about the formation of the cave, its history, and its dimensions.
The visit is perfectly organized; the paths are comfortable, well lit, and do not have large slopes, so it is not a physically demanding visit.
Lake Martel: the great moment of the Cave of Drach
There is a point in the visit that takes all the attention: Lake Martel. Getting here is shocking. Suddenly, you will come across a huge underground lake.
This body of water not only stands out for its size—which it also does—but for what happens in it. During the visit and right at this point, the lights will dim to begin a small classical music concert performed live from some boats. It lasts about ten minutes and is spectacular.
And wait, because after the concert it’s your turn to get on a boat and take a short ride on the lake.
Prices, tickets, and some curiosities that you should know
Tickets can be purchased online or there, although it is best to do it online, because in addition to ensuring a place, it is a little cheaper. The price for adults is €17.50 online and €18.50 at the ticket office. In the case of children, the pass costs €10.50 if you buy it online and €11.50 at the box office.
An important fact is that the caves remain closed in December and January, but the rest of the year they operate normally. And no, the rain does not affect the visit at all, so it is a perfect plan even on cloudy or rainy days.
As for the tour, there are steps and slopes, so access with baby carriages or wheelchairs is not allowed. Smoking is also not allowed inside and it is mandatory to follow the instructions of the staff and not leave the marked paths. What you can take with you is a lot of souvenir photos, but yes, always without flash.
With all this in mind, all you have to do is choose a day, buy your ticket and be amazed.
What to do after visiting the Caves of Drach in Mallorca
Since you are here, it is worth taking advantage of the day and continuing to discover this part of the island, which has more plans than it seems at first glance.
Very close to the caves is the Torre dels Falcons, an old surveillance construction with views that compensate for the walk.
If the day is good, the logical thing is to get closer to the sea. You can choose between Cala Murta, a small and quiet cove ideal for disconnecting, or Playa de Porto Cristo, wider and more comfortable. If it’s hot, it’s the perfect place to sunbathe or take a dip; and if the weather doesn’t invite you to get into the water, you can always stroll along the shore.
And you can’t leave without calmly exploring the town of Porto Cristo and having something at RestoBar Porto Cristo, a good option to end the day.
