Museo Histórico Militar de San Carlos, a military exhibition

The Castillo de San Carlos (San Carlos Castle) was built in the early 17th century to protect Porto Pi, the old natural harbour of Palma. Since time immemorial, this fortress has protected commercial vessels from the scourge of piracy in the Mediterranean. Did you know that its construction dates back to the 17th century by order of Philip III of Spain? Since then, it has witnessed many enhancements and transformations that have turned it into an emblem of naval defence.

Today, San Carlos Castle is much more than a historic fortress: it is home to the San Carlos Military History Museum, with a vast collection encompassing from Antiquity to the present day. Explore its 1,270 m2 of fascinating exhibits, admire the original 17th century castle gate, immerse yourself in the history of the Spanish Infantry and discover the “Llorente” collection of antique weapons in Room 1.

But that’s not all: the museum also pays tribute to the legacy of General Weyler and offers a window into the wars in Cuba and the Philippines.

Do you have an interest in the War of Independence or the history of French war prisoners on the island of Cabrera? Here you will find a captivating narrative covering various aspects of Spain’s military history.

And that’s not all! Since its establishment in 1997, the San Carlos Castle Consortium has been dedicated to the preservation and promotion of this place’s rich history with the active participation of various administrations such as the Spanish Ministry of Defence, the Balearic Islands Government, the Mallorca Island Council and Palma’s City Council.

Faro de Porto Pí

41 metres above sea level stands the third oldest functioning lighthouse in the world, El Faro de Porto Pi, after the Tower of Hercules in Galicia and the Lighthouse in Genoa. Documented as early as 12th of September 1300 in the will of King James II of Mallorca, it is nowadays preserved in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris.

It was initially located outside the old city walls of Palma, near the old entrance to the fortress of San Carlos Castle. It was moved to its current location in 1617 due to the damage caused by a cannon fire coming from San Carlos Castle’s cannons, to protect it from further damage. Formerly, there were four towers that enclosed the harbour with a chain. After its relocation, the lighthouse was placed on top of the Signal Tower, used since the 15th century to indicate the origin and number of ships entering the port.

One of the challenges was to ensure that the light from the lighthouse was visible to ships without exposing the tower to enemy attack. In addition to functioning as a lighthouse, the tower performed signalling duties until 1971. In 1807, a rotating reverberation optic was installed, making it one of the only four Spanish lighthouses with that technology at the time. The electrification of the lighthouse was carried out in 1918, and in 1927 the optics were replaced.

Although it was switched off in 1972 due to the development of the port and the beaconing network, it was switched on again in 1977 due to its historical importance, being declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1983. Nowadays, it houses a permanent exhibition of maritime signals and is notable for its collection of maritime lighting material.

Bellver Castle

Bellver Castle was erected between 1300 and 1311 by order of King James II of Mallorca. Much more than a medieval fortress, it is a historical and architectural treasure. Its strategic position on the top of a hill offers incomparable panoramic views of Palma Bay and the magnificent Serra de Tramuntana. This circular castle, which is unique in Spain, is a jewel of Catalan Gothic architecture that will take you back in time.

In addition to its fascinating architecture and the perfect state of preservation of its chambers, Bellver Castle houses a history museum with Roman, Moroccan and Spanish medieval artefacts that tell the story of the island over the centuries. From its parade ground with Romanesque arches to the castle’s chapel, every corner breathes history and mystery.

The castle was originally conceived as a royal residence, and was the place of residence of the three Kings of Mallorca for brief periods: James II, Sancho I and James III. At the end of the 14th century, John I of Aragon and his court occupied the castle temporarily, seeking refuge from the plague that was raging in Barcelona.

Castillo Bellver

In 1717, the castle was transformed into a military prison. Between 1802 and 1808, Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, Minister of Finance and of Grace and Justice under the reign of Charles IV, was imprisoned in one of the chambers on the first floor. The castle was also used as a prison for numerous French soldiers and officers defeated in the Battle of Bailén. In 1817, General Lacy, the leader of a failed liberal revolution, was shot there. In 1821 the castle was temporarily converted into a coin mint. In addition, during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), more than 800 Republicans were imprisoned in Bellver Castle.

In 1931, the Spanish State ceded the building and its forest to Palma’s City Council, which converted it into the headquarters of the City’s History Museum and the “Despuig” Collection of classical sculpture. Since then, the castle has been the setting for numerous cultural and leisure activities organised by the City Council.

During warm summer evenings, the castle comes alive with open-air concerts in its impressive courtyard under a sky full of stars, offering a unique experience that immerses visitors in the magic of Mallorca.

Whether you’re passionate about history, photography or simply enjoying spectacular views, a visit to Bellver Castle is a must during your stay in Mallorca. Immerse yourself in the greatness of this iconic landmark and be captivated by its timeless charm.

Gardens of Marivent Palace

Marivent Palace Gardens attract visitors all year round, offering a unique experience in a spectacular setting. Built between 1923 and 1925, Marivent Palace stands majestically over Palma Bay, inviting everyone to discover its beauty. Even the Spanish Royal Family chooses this place for their summer holidays.

The gardens were designed by the late Ioannes Saridakis, affectionately known as Joan de Saridakis in Mallorca. Passionate about art and painting, Saridakis would have been delighted to know that his gardens have become an open-air museum since 2017, accessible to all. It is important to note that these gardens were originally conceived as a private residence. Although Saridakis designed both the house and the gardens, he commissioned Mallorcan architect Guillem Forteza to build it.

In 1973, the house became the Royal Palace and closed its doors to the public. However, after a long legal dispute with Saridakis’ heirs, in 1978 it was resolved that the space should not be used exclusively as a private residence, but as an art museum open for public enjoyment.

Visiting the palace’s gardens is a relaxing experience that you can enjoy for free. There, visitors can discover more than 40 native plant species, accompanied by 12 imposing bronze sculptures created by Joan Miró. Some of these sculptures, such as “Personatge”, have been exhibited in international museums.

The gardens have an ordered, geometric structure, perfect for strolling and enjoying nature on a sunny day. It is an ideal activity for couples and families.

Although the gardens are not a main attraction, they are a charming destination if you are in the area. Definitely worth a short visit for those passing nearby.

Castell d'Alaró

The excursion to Castell de Alaró is an experience that leaves an indelible mark thanks to the spectacular views that await at the top. The fascinating thing about this adventure is that it can be undertaken from several starting points, thus adapting to the abilities of each group or children’s ages.

The Castell d’Alaró is a magnificent example of a “castell roquer” or rock castle, located at the top of a mountain and thus taking advantage of the topography to build an impenetrable fortress.

Its walls, strategically built to enclose the perimeter of the summit, combine rocks, cliffs and ramparts, forming an imposing enclosure on the mountain. In fact, it is one of the three rock castles that are still preserved in Mallorca, being the only one that can be accessed freely at the present time.

After arriving at the charming village of Alaró, once you’ve passed the petrol station, you will find the first signs that will guide you towards your destination. Following the signs, you will leave the village and, a few kilometres after, you will find the road leading up to the castle on your left. Once at the beginning of this road, you will see two large parking areas available about 3 km away. From there on, an approximately 70 minute pleasant walk awaits us through lush vegetation, such as arbutus trees with their bright red fruits.

The first part of the route runs along the road, with the possibility of taking a shortcut that will take us to the foot of the ascent to the castle. A signpost will inform us that we are only 30 minutes away from our destination at walking pace. This part of the route can be more demanding, with steep stairs and inclines. Once at the top, spectacular views await us in an incomparable natural setting.

A little further up, you will reach the Oratory and the restaurant, where you can enjoy a well-deserved meal (making a previous reservation at the restaurant in advance is essential). Here you will find a large esplanade and spacious areas to play and spend the rest of the day.

Legend has it that at the steepest point, where the stairs begin, on one of the rocks near the portal of the antemurium, there is a round mark that is popularly attributed to the footprint of King Jaume I’s horse. It is said that the horse rose up against its enemies with such force that he carved his hooves into the stone. The battle went on, and the King continued advancing and killing as many as were put in front of him, to the point of filling the cliff walls with blood. According to legend, this is the reason for the orange colour of the cliffs at sunset.

If you want to enjoy these breathtaking views, a trip to Alaró Castle is essential during your stay in Mallorca. Discover the majesty of this historical site and be captivated by its enduring charm.

Also known as “La Seu”, Palma de Mallorca’s Cathedral is the most emblematic construction of Mallorca. It’s an architectural ensemble built over several centuries to become an authentic work of art that will take your breath away.

Built almost 800 years ago following the Mediterranean Gothic style, the Cathedral stands on the same site where the ancient mosque of the island once stood. Nestled by the sea, today it stands next to the enchanting “Parc de la Mar”, an oasis with an artificial lake that enhances its beauty.

Once inside, you will be in awe at one of the tallest European Gothic naves, with an impressive height of 45 meters. Here are a few highlights not to be missed during your visit:

  • The terraces: Discover the breathtaking views of the city from the heights, which offer an exceptional panoramic view of the city.

On two special days, February 2nd and November 11th, a unique spectacle is offered when the sun’s rays pass through the rose window, creating a light effect in the shape of an “eight”.
