<\/span><b>It\u2019s the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.idealpropertymallorca.com\/blog\/bonany-chapel-mallorca\/\"><b>Ermita de Bonany<\/b><\/a><b>, rebuilt between 1920 and 1925 after the previous sanctuary was destroyed by lightning<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Near the esplanade you\u2019ll also find a stone cross\u2014made by local craftsman Joan Vives Lliteras\u2014erected in tribute to the last sermon Friar Jun\u00edpero Serra gave in Mallorca before sailing to Mexico, where he would go on to found the missions that gave rise to cities such as San Francisco and Los Angeles.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And there\u2019s something else that made it famous: a <\/span><b>legend surrounding Puig de Bonany that says that, in 1609, the people of Petra climbed up here to pray for rain after several years of drought; it rained, and that became a \u201cbon any\u201d\u2014a good year\u2014hence the name of this place.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the centuries, that religious bond grew into something bigger and bigger, so that every year, on the third day of Easter\u2014Tuesday\u2014thousands of people from Petra, Vilafranca de Bonany, Sant Joan and other nearby towns climb up in pilgrimage to the sanctuary to celebrate what\u2019s known as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pancaritat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You won\u2019t be short of shade, even on hot days!<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019d rather switch up your starting point, you can also go up from Vilafranca de Bonany or from Sant Joan, the other two towns that share borders with this hill. All three routes meet at the top, on the sanctuary\u2019s esplanade, and none is difficult. That means that on the lower part of Puig de Bonany you\u2019ll come across dry farmland, while on the upper part <\/span><b>pines and wild olive trees (oleasters)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> predominate.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this mix of large trees it\u2019s easy to come across <\/span><b>species typical of the island such as mastic, Italian buckthorn, myrtle or strawberry tree<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as climbers like sarsaparilla.<\/span><\/p> <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not a specially protected area, but you should look after it as if it were.
