That&#8217;s right! Construction of the current temple began in 1582 and, as was common with almost all large Mallorcan churches, it stretched over entire generations until well into the 17th century.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And of course, there&#8217;s a milestone that has made it very beloved among Mallorcans: <\/span><b>on November 24, 1713, a certain Miquel Josep Serra i Ferrer was baptized in its baptismal font<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That child would eventually become <\/span><b>Friar Jun\u00edpero Serra, the friar who crossed the Atlantic and ended up founding cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It didn&#8217;t follow trends. And this wasn&#8217;t considered strange among the inhabitants of Petra at the time, because large parishes almost carried Gothic as their hallmark.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The result is a <\/span><b>single-nave church, with side chapels and ribbed vaults full of details<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, it&#8217;s not entirely Gothic: it has a Renaissance portal in the sacristy and the Chapel of the Roser, which is Baroque. One of them is the baptismal font we&#8217;ve already told you about, but there&#8217;s more:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The High Altar and Main Altarpiece:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> presiding over the chancel of Sant Pere is the grand Neo-Gothic altarpiece dedicated to Saint Peter, the patron saint of the village.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The Fourteen Side Chapels<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: distributed along the nave are seven chapels on each side, housing a priceless collection of sacred art. The most famous is the Chapel of the Roser for providing that distinctive Baroque touch, but all of them are beautiful.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The Organ<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: above the choir, at the back of the nave, a majestic instrument dating from the 17th century, built by the famous Caimari family of organ builders, is preserved. It has been restored on several occasions to maintain its original sound, which is why it is considered one of the most valuable historical musical pieces in the Pla de Mallorca.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The Ribbed Vaults and Their Sculpted Bosses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: and if you look up at the ceiling, you can admire the meticulous stonework of the Gothic vaults.
