In 1609, the people of Petra climbed this hill to pray. After years of harsh drought that had battered their crops, they needed rain. And after those prayers\u2026 it rained!<\/span><\/p><p><b>That year, which had been looking terrible for the harvest, suddenly became a \u00abbon any\u00bb\u2014a good year, in Mallorcan. That\u2019s where this place has taken its name from ever since.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soon after, they built a chapel to honour a carving of the Virgin Mary which, they say, had been hidden since Islamic times until a shepherd found it on the very same hill.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And here\u2019s the thing: <\/span><b>the<\/b> <b>Ermita de Bonany<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn\u2019t only loved for the rain legend that gave it its name\u2014<\/span><b>it was also the place that bade farewell to Friar Jun\u00edpero Serra\u2014a Franciscan born in Petra in 1713 who crossed the Atlantic to found nine missions in California and was later canonised as a saint in 2015\u2014before he set sail for Mexico<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Lightning destroyed the original Baroque temple, which was eventually demolished in 1919.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On its remains, between 1920 and 1925, the building you can visit today was built. It\u2019s <\/span><b>Neo-Baroque in style, with a Latin-cross floor plan, a single nave and a barrel vault<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outside, the fa\u00e7ade keeps a curved pediment with Petra\u2019s coat of arms, flanked by two towers, and inside you\u2019ll find a single, sober nave and an altar where the polychrome wooden carving of the Virgin of Bonany is kept.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5b2cbe07 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"5b2cbe07\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-391d6372 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"391d6372\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-77619db0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"77619db0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How to get to Bonany\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-10c768b9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"10c768b9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Palma you\u2019ve got about 50 km ahead of you, so allow almost an hour\u2019s drive. Take the Ma-15 towards Manacor and, before you get there, turn off towards Petra on the Ma-3320. From the village, you\u2019ll need to take a small local road up to the esplanade at the Ermita de Bonany. It\u2019s about 2 km.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And without a car? You can also <\/span><b>walk up to the sanctuary: there are routes from Petra, Vilafranca de Bonany and Sant Joan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014all three are quite manageable and take at most a couple of hours there and back. Nothing that requires training. But it\u2019s to the west where the real show unfolds, because you\u2019ll have views of the <\/span><b>Serra de Tramuntana<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
